Week of October 10-14 Happy Columbus Day

We will continue to learn about friends in reading and social studies.  We will also learn about Christopher Columbus this week.  Here is a link for fun activities: Friends All Around. Here is a link for the parent letter: Friends Week 2.
In Math we will take the Chapter 2 Test about more, fewer and ordinal numbers to 5.  Please take time to review "first, second, third, fourth and fifth" with your child.  The rest of the week we will learn to recognize and form the numbers 6-10.  The students will need to learn to recognize what the number 6-10 look like on a ten frame.  They will also need to know how many more makes ten.  For example, if the number is 7, they will have to be able to figure out that 3 more would make 10, or fill the ten frame.  Another way to think of it is 7 is 3 less than 10.  Here are some rhymes to help them remember how to make the numbers 6-10:
6:  A line and a loop, six rolls a hoop.
7:  Across the sky and down from heaven that's the way we make a seven.
8:  Make a "S" but do not wait, go back to the top to make an eight.
9:  A loop and a line, that's the way we make a nine.
10:  A 1 and a 0, 10 is easy you know!
In Science we will learn about Florida Black Bears and make a banner for the Black Bear Festival.  We will also continue with five senses activities.
This week's letter/sound is "P," color is purple, number is 5 and shape is cylinder. Try to challenge your child by thinking of words that start with P (ex: pan) and words that end with P (ex: mop.)  You can even see if they can spell the words.
Your child should be able to recognize these sight words:   the    can     we     a     I     like.    We will have a sight word test on Friday.  If your child can already recognize these words, work on writing and spelling them.
Your child should be able to blend, read and spell these words:  am    Sam   Pam   map
The children are learning great things.  I am very proud of them.  Many of them are reading the homework books extra times at home for pennies for treasure box.  Don't forget to color in your Pizza Hut Book-It Calendar every day you and your child read for 10 minutes.  Thanks for all you do to help at home.
