Week of September 26th

This is the last week of our reading unit about families.  Please remember to send in your family picture or family tree so your child can share it with the class.  This week we will learn how families grow and change.  Here is a link for fun activities for your child:  Peter's Chair.  Here is a link for parent information:  Families Week 3.    We will review the letters "m" and "a," review the sight words "the" and "we,"  learn about the number three, the color blue and the square shape.  On Friday we will take our first reading assessment.  Your child should be able to identify the beginning sound in words that start with "m" and the beginning and middle sounds of words with "a" (example: apple starts with "a" and hat has "a" in the middle).  On Friday we will also try many things made from apples, make our own applesauce and compare that to applesauce bought from the store, and graph our favorite type of apples and food made from apples. This week in math we will take a test on numbers 1-5 and then start a new chapter about more and fewer.  You can help your child practice this skill at home by putting out two sets of objects (cereal, blocks, crayons, etc) and asking them which set has more and which set has fewer (or less).  If they are able to do that, make it a bit more challenging and ask how many more the set has.  In science we will continue to learn about our five senses and do activities with our sense of hearing. Don't forget to check out the link on the left side called "Skills to Know."  This shows you everything your child will be tested on for the first report card.
